For the Swiss Power-to-X Collaborative Innovation Network (SPIN), we recently conducted an AI-supported analysis of the public perception of Power-to-X (P2X) and opinion formation in Switzerland. Power-to-X is a concept in which (renewable) energy is converted into molecular, chemical energy carriers or "products" (short "X").
The study shows that Power-to-X has so far been primarily a topic for experts, but is increasingly being linked to socially relevant aspects such as security of supply, climate protection and mobility.

The analysis, which was presented as part of a regular SPIN webinar, is based on an AI-supported evaluation of Swiss media sources and public discussions on the Internet and sheds light on the thematic embedding of Power-to-X in the public discourse.
P2X (Power-to-X) Semantic Analysis: The Key Results
It shows, among other things, that the debate about Power-to-X in Switzerland is currently being led primarily by experts and political actors. There is hardly any broad social discourse, so the technology has been present primarily in expert circles. Power-to-X is particularly frequently discussed in connection with the production of green hydrogen, the expansion of infrastructure, and the energy transition. The focus is on questions of seasonal energy supply and geopolitical dependence or independence.
Politically, the topic is clearly defined: the discussion is being driven forward by parties such as GLP, SVP, Mitte, and FDP, representing different perspectives on the technology and its implementation. Despite its high strategic relevance, however, Power-to-X remains little known among the general public. Search queries show that terms such as "e-fuels" and "hydrogen" are of general interest, while more specific concepts such as sector coupling or methanol receive little attention. This shows that there is still a considerable need for communication to bring the topic out of the expert niche and into the social debate.
P2X - SPIN as a bridge builder for society
The semantic analysis also shows that SPIN can play a central role in communicating Power-to-X (P2x). As a network, SPIN not only bundles specialist knowledge, but also provides orientation for politics, business and society.
“ In order for Power-to-X to have its full effect, the technology must be taken from the expert circle to the wider society ,” says co-managing director Peter Metzinger. “ The evAI analysis shows that strategic communication must be simplified and specifically focused on the most visible and relevant aspects .”
Outlook: Recommendations for action for broader acceptanceTo ensure that Power-to-X becomes more firmly anchored in society, targeted measures are necessary. A key aspect is simplifying communication. The public debate should focus on a few crucial terms to make the relevance of Power-to-X more understandable and tangible. Complex technical details should not be the focus, but rather the advantages and practical applications of the technology. This is one of the reasons why SPIN published a brochure last autumn with explanations of widely used terms related to Power-to-X. In addition, it is crucial to create empirical data. As long as Power-to-X is discussed primarily theoretically, it will remain an abstract idea for many people. Only through pilot projects, visible applications, and concrete success stories can trust in the technology grow. The population must be able to experience the advantages in everyday life, be it through the use of e-fuels in mobility or through innovative energy storage solutions. Finally, strong political and economic integration is needed. The expansion of the infrastructure for the production and use of hydrogen and other power-to-X technologies must be actively promoted. This is not only a technical challenge, but also a question of the right political framework. Clear investment incentives and long-term strategies are essential to give companies and investors security and to sustainably promote the development of this pioneering technology. |
